Introduction to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Dr. Tiffany Griffiths, a licensed clinical psychologist, will be offering 2 introductory classes to MBSR, an evidence-based 8-week intensive training in mindfulness meditation, on August 14th and 21st at the Recovery Bank.

What? Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based 8-week intensive training in mindfulness meditation, focusing on teaching mindfulness practices that are based on ancient healing practices and educating participants on the nature of the mind. The focus is mainly experiential and we meet in a group format for 2 1/2 hours a week with one 6-hour day of silence between week 6 and 7. Classes provide a community of learning and practice for motivation, support, and belonging.

When? Wednesday’s from 530-8 at The Recovery Bank, beginning on September 25th. In addition, Mindfulnepa will hold an MBSR class on Tuesday’s from 6-830, beginning on September 24th. This will provide participants with an opportunity to join the other class if they have to miss a class. It is important to note that participants are expected to attend all classes and missing any more than one reduces the benefits of the class greatly. The 6 hour class will be held on November 10th from 10-4 at The Recovery Bank. For those interested in learning more before taking the leap, 2 introductory classes will be held on August 14th and 21st from 6-730 at The Recovery Bank. These informational sessions are free.

Who? MBSR is for anyone interested in reducing stress and living a more authentic life as well as for those who have physical and psychological symptoms. Research has shown it to be effective in reducing symptoms related to chronic pain, hypertension, gastrointestinal distress, diabetes, sleep disorders, eating disorders, asthma, psoriasis, addictions, anxiety, depression, trauma, and attentional deficits.

How much? The cost for the mandatory orientation (to be held on the first day of class), 8 MBSR sessions, and 6 hour day of silence is $200. For those who are being treated for or are experiencing psychological symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbance, addiction, depression, attentional deficits, etc. who have health insurance, your insurance may pay for some or all of the sessions. In order to use your health insurance, an appointment must be made with the practice of Tiffany Griffiths, Psy.D. & Associates (570) 342-8434 for an intake to determine if MBSR would be medically necessary and covered by your insurance.
